Newport Brochure Offers Motion-Control Solutions

Newport has released a motion-control capabilities brochure which presents the company's technologies for use in sectors such as R and D, aerospace and defence, and life and health sciences. Entitled 'Our solutions at your service', the publication showcase's Newport's portfolio of precision motion-control products, technologies and services. Additional application sectors include photovoltaics, microelectronics, laser research, fibre-optic communications, semiconductor wafer manufacturing, metrology and industrial manufacturing.

The 44-page full-colour brochure includes a timeline covering over 40 years of Newport's experience and expertise in motion control. It presents technologies, capabilities and solutions for nano-positioning and piezo-motor device applications, air bearing technology platforms, ceramic materials, linear, vertical and rotation stages, and custom-built multi-axis motion systems.

Engineered sub-systems and sub-assemblies, plus a cross-section of Newport's newest innovations are also covered in the brochure. Recently introduced products, such as the Singulys air bearing stage and bridge, the small-footprint URS50BCC and URS50BPP precision rotation stages with 360deg continuous motion, plus standard products, custom systems and OEM examples, are also included.

FUSE SIZING CONSIDERATIONS FOR HIGHER EFFICIENCY MOTORS

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved. However, if sizing at this level prevents the motor from starting, it may then be necessary to increase the fuse ampere rating and it then becomes important to know the NEC sizing limitations.
