MBE Uses Delcam's Powershape Design Software
Delcam's Powershape design software is helping MBE Cylinder Heads and Manifolds, which supplies equipment for race teams and engine builders, to achieve both precision and power. Mark Olson, MBE's head programmer, said: 'We do a lot of manual work to develop the shape of the manifold. 'Once we are happy with the design, we digitise the ports, chambers and whatever else needs to be machined and we import the data into Powershape,' he added.
According to Olsen, Powershape features a powerful surfacing engine and can manipulate surface data into any shape. He is able to move designs into Powermill without any problems thanks to the transparent interface between Powermill and Powershape. Olsen said: 'You can cut and paste geometry from one program to another very quickly without conventional importing and exporting.
'Powermill has a very powerful automatic porting routine. 'Powermill keeps the edge of the tool in contact with the port as opposed to the tip of the tool. 'Cutting with the edge of the tool gives you much better surface finish,' he added. Olson was also drawn to how Powermill 'sees' the model when it is creating toolpaths. Despite clearances as little as 15/1,000ths of an inch, he has not experienced any interference or collisions using Powermill.
