Brass Wire To Accelerate EDM Machining Speeds

Sodick's new brass E-40 wire, now available in the UK from Sodi-Tech EDM, will enable EDM users to achieve higher machining speeds and enhanced accuracy from their equipment. The E-40 wire (with a copper-to-zinc ratio of 60:40) is manufactured in house - from foundry, through wire drawing to packaging - to ensure maximum control over every part of the process and, therefore, to ensure excellent wire quality.

The wire is available in diameters of 0.07mm, 0.1mm, 0.15mm, 0.2mm, 0.25mm and 0.3mm; the 0.07mm and 0.1mm wires are paraffin coated. All wires can be used on both Sodick and other EDM manufacturers' EDM machines. The E-40 wire offers excellent straightness, ensuring reliable automatic wire threading, and each spool is individually tested to eliminate curling and torsion, according to Sodi-Tech EDM.

The wire's stable mechanical characteristics include a tensile strength of +950N/mm2, an elongation of four per cent or less and contact sense variation, confirmed in internal tests, of plus or minus one micron. In common with other Sodick consumable wires, the new E-40 wire provides high dimensional accuracy with a diameter tolerance of between +0~0.002mm and circularity within 0.001mm. The quality control system, using special diamond wire-drawing dies and lubricating oil, ensures that the wire's ultra-smooth surface is free from irregularities, dirt and scratches.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays.
