Bowers Metrology Launches Hardness Testers

Internal measurement specialist Bowers Metrology has launched the EW-4000 series of micro/macro Vickers, Knoop and Brinell hardness testers. The flexible bench testers combine practical design with high specifications, according to the company. Closed-loop, load-cell technology and a patent-pending force feedback system ensure rapid EW-4000 test results with high levels of accuracy. The tester's closed-loop system applies a given force, calculates, filters and controls digital data in a 32-bit embedded CPU system.

The elimination of cumbersome weights and complex mechanical control systems enables the EW-4000 to achieve accuracy, repeatability and reliability at an affordable price, Bowers Metrology said. To enable each customer to receive a hardness tester that exactly matches their needs, the flexible EW-4000 series has four-position turrets that can be customised by using a range of available indenters, objectives, stages and video systems. Meeting all applicable EN ISO and ASTM standards, the Bowers EW-4000 series allows users to buy a basic system and upgrade at a later date.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
