Machine Building Systems Offers Item ESD Fasteners

Machine Building Systems is offering Item ESD standard fastening sets for the Line 5 20x20 module, the Line 6 30x30 module and the Line 8 40x40 module. According to the company, aluminium profiles, used in the construction of modern special-purpose machines and assembly and test equipment, typically have a hard anodised surface.

This has advantages in terms of resistance to damage, but, because the anodised layer is non-conducting, electrostatic build-up may be present in parts of any frame. Item's ESD fasteners have a yellow passivated layer for easy identification and, although they are almost identical in appearance to the existing standard fastening sets, they are subtly different in one key dimension.

They actually work by destroying an inconspicuous part of the anodised layer in the relevant profile as the fastener is tightened. Extensive tests have proved that continuity is maintained, guaranteeing a long-term electrical connection. The profile and fasteners may still be stripped down at a later date and re-used for other purposes.

Where earth bonding is required as part of a safety circuit, specially designed terminals and earthing straps are also available within the Item system. The ESD fasteners can be seen on the Machine Building Systems website and are available from its Ripley factory.
