Software Speeds Development of Baby Milk Warmer

Intelligent Fluid Solutions (IFS) has saved more than two years and USD54,000 in development costs for the Yoomi combined baby milk warmer and bottle, using simulation software from Ansys. A bottle and warmer in one, the Yoomi heats a baby's feed to the natural temperature of breast milk at the touch of a button, in just 60 seconds. The cold feed is warmed as it flows through specially designed channels on the outside of the warmer.

By the time the feed reaches the teat, it is at natural breast-milk temperature. Ansys engineering software was used to solve the design challenge of taking fresh milk from 5 to 34C within one minute of activation, across a full range of baby drinking speeds. The engineering team used Ansys CFX to simulate the multiphase fluid dynamics of the proposed design. By evaluating simulated prototypes, IFS doubled the performance of the initial design while building only four physical prototypes.

This saved USD54,000 by avoiding the need for 12 physical prototypes and delivered the Yoomi to market two years earlier than otherwise would have been possible. When development of the Yoomi first began, each prototype cost USD4,500 and took a week to build. In addition, the properties of the rapid prototypes did not match the production version of the bottle warmer. Yoomi's developer estimates it would have taken 16 prototypes over four years to develop a marketable product. Ansys CFX cut this time and cost and gave its development a head start. When the Yoomi was launched on the web, the initial production run sold out in just four days. Production has been increased to meet demand and distribution channels are being expanded to include UK and international retailers.
