Piezomotor Technology Ensures High Velocity

Physik Instrumente (PI) has introduced the upgraded M-660 rotation stage, the E-725 three-channel motion controller and Picma piezo stack actuators, for applications including tracking and inspection. The new version of the M-660 rotation stage has a 15mm construction height and a higher position resolution of 4 urad, making accurate inspection tasks possible. The M-660.45 stage, which is designed for a maximum load of up to 1kg, has a clear aperture of 35mm in diameter and compact combinations with linear stages are possible.

PI's PILine piezomotor technology ensures compact construction height, as well as a high velocity of up to two rotations per second. The integrated U-164 PILine linear motors offer a maximum torque of up to 0.3Nm, regardless of the direction of motion. PILine motors transmit the force directly onto the runner at the moving platform and thus keep the position stable, even when powered down. The performance of precision positioning systems equally depends on their mechanical systems and on the way they are controlled.

PI has been relying on digital technology for more than 10 years now and adds the E-725 three-channel motion controller to its portfolio. Digital technology gives users access via software to numerous parameters, which optimise the settling time and linearity, or compensate for system inertia during fast scans. Among other performance features, the E-725 optimises the dynamic positioning of specimen in the X, Y and Z directions for applications such as tracking or atomic force microscopy. It uses modern interfaces such as USB and Ethernet, and there are many software drivers available to support its integration as a sub-system in existing structures.

The E-725 has a powerful 32-bit processor with 225MHz, ensuring a servo rate of 20kHz. The position signal has a 24-bit resolution. Digital inputs and outputs offer direct trigger signals from and to the devices in the system environment. Optionally, the individual axes can be controlled via analogue inputs. In addition, the ID chip feature makes it possible to directly operate the nanopositioning system without prior adjustment at the factory.

Meanwhile, PI Ceramic now has a new type of production technology that enables it to produce multi-layer piezo actuators with inner holes or in unusual shapes. The technology can produce tiny holes, a structured ceramic surface and almost any type of contour, including three-dimensional ones. Special milling machines work the sensitive ceramic films in the green state, before sintering. The individual layers are then equipped with electrodes and laminated. The co-fired process is used to sinter the ceramic with the internal electrodes, as happens with Picma standard actuators.

The result is a continuous insulating ceramic layer with all its familiar advantages. The piezo actuator is protected against humidity and has a high dielectric strength, which significantly increases the lifetime when compared to conventional polymer-insulated actuators. Picma piezo stack actuators with additional inner hole are suitable for fibre-stretching applications, for example. It is also possible to produce piezo bender elements in different designs, with and without a hole.
