Converteam Supplies Equipment for Tidal Turbine

Converteam is to supply key electrical equipment for a 1MW tidal turbine known as HS1000 in a contract awarded by Hammerfest Strom UK. The contract includes the subsea generator and the shore-based systems including a power converter, transformer and switchgear. The turbine will be deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre in Orkney, off north-east Scotland, during late summer 2011.

After an initial test period, Hammerfest Strom will work with Scottish Power Renewables to install a 10MW array at Islay in 2013 utilising the HS1000 generic design selected by Scottish Power Renewables as its preferred device.

When selecting the proper fuse for short circuit protection in motor starting applications, it is important to not only ensure that the fuse will not nuisance open during motor start up times, but also that the fuse will coordinate as required with overload relays. When sizing fuses between 125% and 150% of the motor nameplate current, several advantages, including ease of coordination with an overload device, a smaller disconnect, and increased short circuit protection from a lower fuse rating, can be achieved.
