Loctite 3090 Increases Versatility Of Adhesives

Henkel has introduced Loctite 3090, a two-part cyanoacrylate that increases the versatility of instant adhesives. Alongside all the traditional benefits - an initial bond within seconds, clear bondline, high strength and easy dispensing - this product allows any exposed adhesive remaining outside of the joint to harden within two to four minutes. This additional advantage removes the need for a post-assembly activator. Not only that, larger gap sizes can be readily accommodated. The new adhesive will bond close-fitting parts in 20 seconds - and even where the gap is 3mm, bonding is achieved in less than 90 seconds. Furthermore, the product can be used where a more significant gap - up to 5mm - is involved. Loctite 3090, which can be used on a variety of substrates, including plastic, rubber, wood, stone, leather, fabric or metal, is capable of withstanding a force of some 20N/mm2. Methacrylate Adhesives Bond Turbine Blades

ITW Plexus has developed fast-curing, 1:1 methacrylate structural adhesives for turbine blades. These advanced methacrylate adhesives chemically fuse FRP/GRP, composite stiffener spars and perimeter flange joints. They also give increased peel resistance and cycle fatigue resistance while reducing damage encountered during transportation. Room temperature snap cure properties have helped to increase production rates and eliminate the high capital expenses and energy costs associated with post-bake ovens that are required to cure some epoxies. No abrasion or surface preparation is required. The company's MA560 and MA590 adhesives are also claimed to increase blade performance and reduce processing time. LNG Vessel Uses Araldite Adhesives

Huntsman has supplied its Araldite adhesives for the construction of an LNG (liquefied natural gas) carrier vessel, built by Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard and owned by China LNG Shipping holdings. The country's first LNG import project employed Araldite adhesive for use in the containment system. LNG ships are among the largest transportation vessels in the world. They carry huge supplies of LNG to energy customers across the globe with increasing regularity as the demand for LNG continues to grow. China's first domestically built LNG carrier, the Dapeng Sun, with a capacity of around 147,000m3 went into service in late 2007. Huntsman's Araldite LNG epoxy adhesive, XD 4460-2/XD 4461-2, is primarily used to create high-performance, durable seals between the inside of the LNG vessels and the internal insulation box that helps to keep the gas stable at temperatures as low as -170C and up to +40C.
